TFA's in the Spotlight: INSOMNIA by J. R. Johansson.

Loki here. Again. Featuring J. R. Johansson's upcoming novel INSOMNIA, which was already on my to read list BEFORE interviewing her for this post. So humans, take my word for it, this sounds pretty awesome.

I have two young sons and a wonderful husband. In fact, other than my cat, Cleo, I'm nearly drowning in testosterone. My family is a handful, but they always keep me busy and happy.

My B.S. degree is in public relations and I have a background in marketing. My abnormal psychology minor inspired many of my characters.

When I'm not writing, I love reading, playing board games, and sitting in my hot tub. My dream is that someday I'll find a way to do all three at the same time.

I currently live in a valley between majestic mountains and a beautiful lake where the sun shines nearly 300 days per year.

I'm represented by the lovely Kathleen Rushall of Marsal Lyon Literary Agency

Let the Q&A begin!

LOKI: Pitch your novel, INSOMNIA, in a tweet.

JENN: INSOMNIA is about a teenage boy who spends every night stuck in the dreams of the last person he made eye contact with and it's killing him.

LOKI: What were you doing when you had the inspiration for INSOMNIA? Or, if you don't remember exactly, do you remember a time when, at any stage in the writing process, you had a light bulb moment when something "clicked?"

JENN: I do remember, but I've told that story a few times, so I'll do the second option. I was tossing around the idea of a boy who was dying of sleep deprivation and what to do with that...I like to try to come up with several ideas before picking one so I don't end up with the obvious choice. When I came up with an idea that he could become addicted to sleep like a drug, it just felt like everything clicked into place around it. Still love that idea and it's associated creepiness.

LOKI: Looking back, what was your favorite part about writing INSOMNIA, from the first draft to the last revisions with your editor?

JENN: My favorite part is always revisions. I love taking a story that's already in place and really polishing it. It's the first time after the idea phase when I really fall in love with my story and characters all over again. It's the best.

LOKI: What is the best writing advice you ever received? Why?

JENN: Treat writing like a profession. Devote time to practicing, learning, honing your craft...but also educate yourself on the business side of things. Understand more with each book about marketing, publishing, changes within your genre, etc. The more well-rounded you are in your understanding of what it means to be an author, the better prepared you'll be for the inevitable bumps in the road.

LOKI: Give us three:

-Favorite villains:

JENN: Loki (obviously), Madame Th√©nardier in Les Mis√©rables ,Hans Gruber from Die Hard

-Favorite kinds of candy:

JENN: Kit Kat, Red Vines, Milk Duds

-Songs you recently had in your head:

JENN: Titanium - David Guetta, Dark Side - Kelly Clarkson, Stars - Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

LOKI: Thank you very much for joining us!

JENN: Thank you so much for having me! This was such a fun interview.

LOKI: Now, human readers, here is information about Jenn's novel, INSOMNIA, which comes out on June 8th, 2013 from Flux.

It’s been four years since I slept, and I suspect it is killing me.
Instead of sleeping, Parker Chipp enters the dream of the last person he’s had eye contact with. He spends his nights crushed by other people’s fear and pain, by their disturbing secrets—and Parker can never have dreams of his own. The severe exhaustion is crippling him. If nothing changes, Parker could soon be facing psychosis and even death.

Then he meets Mia. Her dreams, calm and beautifully uncomplicated, allow him blissful rest that is utterly addictive. Parker starts going to bizarre lengths to catch Mia’s eye every day. Everyone at school thinks he’s gone over the edge, even his best friend. And when Mia is threatened by a true stalker, everyone thinks it’s Parker.

Suffering blackouts, Parker begins to wonder if he is turning into someone dangerous. What if the monster stalking Mia is him after all?
